The Night Devours
I often get movies sent to my inbox that I’ve never heard of or know nothing about. I can’t quite explain it, but seeing a movie before it’s released is so thrilling! I get sent a lot of movies to review and sometimes my greed and curiosity gets the best of me. Typically, this leaves me with an overwhelming amount of films that I want to watch and review, but can’t in a timely manner.
One of the movies I agreed to check out recently is the 2024 horror flick The Night Devours from director Jason Hawkins. This one has been on my list for weeks, but I just now got around to it. And boy am I glad I did because this movie was a blast! Before I go any further, huge thank you to Jason for sending this one over to me.
The film follows a young man who grew up obsessed with his father and wanting acceptance from him. But his father constantly neglected and abused him, causing hatred to fester inside our protagonist’s heart. Working as a ridesharing driver during the night lighting hours, he meets these victims whenever they book their ride in his car. After each murder he turns to his camera explaining why he does what he does and how it’s all because of how he was brought up.
The Night Devours was actually really good; however had I known it was done in found footage/mockumentary style beforehand i would have passed on watching it altogether (I’m not fond). These types of films are not my cup tea but nonetheless worked well mostly due great atmosphere along with great character development even though cliché at this point solid story. I enjoyed it though feel there were few things that could’ve been done differently for better results.
The acting throughout this entire production was outstanding! Now granted, I have problem when films do scenes where they’re doing whole MTV’s Real World confessional style rants front camera; it’s always awkward & usually actor tries too hard make it feel genuine. Not here, though! It works and during each one these I could feel different emotions being channeled through the actors. Yes, these repetitive scenes did overstay their welcome but damn if acting ain’t good!
The story behind “Night Devours” is very clever; however, would be far more effective as a short film. Having said that male killer with daddy issues finding victims while working ride sharing job at night is very clever but, does repeat itself ALOT. The ride sharing victims along with camera confessionals just go on for way too long when they start feeling monotonous (should’ve been done once or twice).
Last but not least, don’t expect bloodbath or gory flick from this one. It’s character driven movie with no real blood/practical effects for viewer to feast their eyes on. Overall, “The Night Devours” is solid indie flick about serial killer however would’ve been much better if trimmed down some more. Regardless, check it out worth your time!
