Mood Ring

Kiki Oner and her best friend Stelly G return to their home island Viti in a messy, confusing visual poem that mashes up journal entries with travelogue. In this their first trip together as grown-ups they make contact with a past that is not theirs but coloured by memories. It’s a journey of feeling, almost having lived.

We are asking for money for this video production which includes shooting in Fiji and Eora, pre-production in Eora, development in both places, travel expenses, equipment hire/purchase, accommodation, mandatory insurances, covid checks at private doctors and mandatory quarantine in Fiji at our own expense.

This work is for the Fijian community; the experimental film crowd; aunties with family across the ocean; children of the Pacific diaspora who struggle to fit in; forever growing Fijian community in Eora and beyond.

Mood Ring is a collab between Stelly G & Garden Reflexxx: community artists based on Eora land who have been working independently over 5-years to provide more egalitarian filmmaking practices outside of budget privilege. Mood Ring is an extension of our realist film movement. We need to support this work by and for community because it’s Stelly G’s directorial debut. Supporting Stelly G is supporting self-taught independent queer artists continuing to create without inherited wealth funding from The Academy studio backing or education systems failing us.

Fiji has a small film industry and we’re invested in growing it. This financial aid will go towards QTIBIPOC production infrastructure local Fijian communities/artists Indigenous storytelling underground cinema support etc! This is personal thinking about traditional protocol on Fijian land; must stay close-knit & independent.

Donations will be going towards our production budget (travel costs/accommodation/covid expenses). This does not account for 3 months of pre production we have already done. We are also needing funding for Sevusevu this is a traditional offering and protocol that we practice on arrival.

The end result will be an experimental video shown to community in Eora and Fiji. We have bigger plans for this but need funding for the first stage.
