The biggest call centre scam in India is exposed by the upcoming streaming documentary ‘Bogus Phone Operators’.
‘Thane Call Centre Scam’ is a documentary that uncovers criminal networks behind scams involving American citizens who were being swindled from India.
A group of 600 call centre employees in Thane, Maharashtra allegedly worked together to defraud over 15,000 Americans, resulting in losses estimated at more than $50m.
The film delves deep into this particular fraud which led to collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Indian Police to unearth the ‘Thane Call Centre Scam’.
Investigative crime documentaries will be available for streaming on DocuBay, IN10 Media Network’s global premium membership based OTT platform.
Girish Dwibhashyam, COO of DocuBay said: “We had no choice but to make this shocking film. Mumbai’s suburbs are home to what seemed like an ordinary office building with hundreds of employees working for an American company except they were actually stealing from thousands of their own countrymen.”
“‘Bogus Phone Operators’ aims at exposing those responsible for these crimes. The filmmakers have investigated and explored the intricacies involved in running such a large-scale fraud operation which appears as tip of iceberg,” he added.
Despite efforts made by law enforcement agencies internationally against similar organisations, it shows how these groups continue thriving unchecked while demanding greater cooperation among nations and increased public knowledge about cyber security risks posed by scammers.
It was directed by Nation Award winning filmmaker Satya Prakash Upadhyaya who said: “I have been cheated many times through phone calls so this work is very close to my heart because I believe that if we don’t wake up now then one day they will take over our society.”
During their research and filming process, they worked with experts from various fields like media persons, lawyers etcetera who helped them overcome different challenges faced by them during their work. They also spent months researching and collaborating with Indian Police and the FBI which enabled them to establish contact with victims who shared their experiences about how this scam affected their lives.
“Through this film we hope people understand just how dangerous it is out there in cyberspace where these criminals operate freely without any fear of being caught or punished for what they do,” said Yule Kurup, producer at Nirvaan Entertainment.
