An Affair Of Love
She publishes an advertisement in a sex newspaper. There is something that she has always wanted to do with a man, and now, in her 40s, she believes it will never happen unless she takes some risks. He responds to the ad. They meet at a café. They look respectable and ordinary nice people, we would say. They agree on going to a hotel, the door of the room closes. We never learn what happens between them inside that room. It’s what both of them have been waiting for. When they are asked if it was “good” once it’s over, their faces show us that indeed it was.
“An Affair of Love” is the story of two adults named “He” and “She” who want something very badly and act upon this desire strongly; but this narrative tells about desiring itself rather than what they desire which makes it more interesting because we don’t know their secret so much hotter too! The scene in Belle de Jour came back to me where Catherine Deneuve plays as housewife working afternoons at brothel when client opens little box & shows her what’s inside whatever it may be she refuses his request there being nothing he can offer her which puts us right into same position as movie does here behind that room door or briefcase from pulp fiction A void for our imaginations!
But this isn’t just about sex though if were then film would have had reveal secret no its these people! Slowly bashful ness goes away between them selves now seeing already lei likes Elle later becoming fond off him also with such deal (they shall meet unknown strangers) before personal feels free replacing impersonal etcetera etcetera lol. Once week they do something literally unimaginable to us yet eventually even gather enough courage thinkin about regular olé’ sexual intercourse
When movie starts affair already ended thus much made clear immediately so that’s why when talking themselves remembering some things don’t quite add up but that’s normal sometimes memories do differ despite having shared same moments like with any other couple who’ve been together for long enough right? So they recall events which trespassed into their private lives an old man falling down in the hotel, for instance: trying help him dragged them back into everydayness and overloaded fantasy
Can they live happily ever after? This is what the film tells us when it says that they did not. Why? Frederic Fonteyne by, the writer-director, makes a better and more useful movie about love and sex than any Hollywood picture that acts out adult-adolescent fantasies in answering this question. “What does the old saying say?” You must be careful what you want because you might get it.
As this movie sees them, their relationship is neither based on liking each other nor on sex or orgasm. It is about finding someone who shares your secret which has been a part of you from your earliest memories, a secret that seemed to have been shared by none and which you believed would be with you alone forever: and What if someone else’s secret matches up with yours?
These words take your breath away because both of you are looking at things together something representing truth & beauty in our lives. No matter how much two people may be in love with each other they still feel tenderness for one another only because both sides know how long and hard has been the other person’s look-out but without hope sometimes.
Therefore, the film should never disclose their secret; otherwise it will let down our curiosity unless there happens to be only one answer, which we already have had no idea about so far but can’t be known by any movie either.
