The movie begins by showing the war torn Afghanistan where a post-yuppie nerd (you can tell it from his wire rimmed glasses) paces in front of a trailer, while his assistant sits down before a computer. Things are getting real, you can tell this by her angry typing sound and that “funds transferring” window on the screen. It is remarkable how on this OS you just keep writing when money are still transacting. In any case she says soon after, “Eees done, Meester Donovan.
The moaney is secure” And they throw the laptop into bags and jump into the SUV but wait; they are ambushed by Meester Donovan’s own security force who as it turns out are black op mercenary dudes with various lengths of facial hair. They disgruntled because Mr. Donovan has tried to quit on them without paying them their due and make him give them one of these banks where he deposited his various millions of illicit profits from wars.
So he does but only after being told by one of the guys “We’re not here to play games.”
And then they kill him. These men don’t dabble around. They even shot the woman with Meester Donovan in the back. A pretty Interpol agent would rather describe them as follows: “These men do not panic; they adapt and execute.”
Back at home though, Massachusetts high school student Kenny (Michael Rainey Jr.) inexplicably decides to record himself entering a boys’ bathroom with his phone when he is waylaid by three punks, one of whom tries to dunk his head into a urinal. He may be mild mannered but hits lucky punch against an adult who enters simultaneously and ends up in principal’s office.
For punishment Kenny must go through a ‘ride along’ experience with some policemen from this relatively crime-free community in Massachusetts. One cop Nicolas Cage who plays Mike Chandler, a Bitter Man In Widowhood. Who Has Forgotten? Why He Even Joined? The Force has one of those chosen who is his son in law Steve, the morning of this ride along he gets to know that his wife, Mike’s daughter will be having their baby.
By now you’ve probably guessed the location of the bank that Meester Donovan’s team of beardos are going to try and rob. They want one million dollars as their price isn’t that great? No way there had been millions in seed money. These super pros come into town yelling and swearing and doing everything loud movie bank robbers should not do, which is make themselves noticed. Have none of these people seen “The Friends of Eddie Coyle”?
So it is predestined that Disillusioned Cop, Disillusioned Cop’s Son-In-Law and Innocent Ride Along Kid have got to face down this evil. It has variously been described as being “in the vein of ‘Black Hawk Down’ and ‘End of Watch’”, or alternatively as being “based on the true story of one of the longest and bloodiest events in police history”. The “black hawk down” part presumably refers to all those gaping wounds borne by characters both major and minor. But where does rest come from; because it really adds up to nothing more than a bunch of noise?
The movie is blessedly brief, however; you do not even get to enter into a righteous rage against the villains which could leave you feeling hollow at the end of it all.
